The end of the year Banquet is scheduled for Tuesday May 24th 5:30, at the Carmel Youth Center. It iwll be a potluck and there are still LOTS of spots to fill in the food sign ups. Please contact Jeannie Kim at centralcoast8@yahoo.com to sign up. They will also need folks to come early to help with set-up and some to stay for clean-up.

The team Captains are collecting $15 from each of the boys to pay for the coaches gifts so please have them give it to Ben Regan, Ben Price, Joe Hamwey or Matt Jones by Monday.

New Time for Pasta Feed!!

As Friday is a minimum day and practice will be right after school we have moved the Pasta feed up to 4:00 pm. All the other info below is correct!

MTAL's are right around the corner (May 14th at Catalina) and it is time once again for the Annual Pre MTAL Pasta Feed! For all you new folks out there this gives the boys an opportunity to get their needed carbohydrates the night before League Championships in a fun and social environment. Sam Stoffer's parents have again volunteered to host this important event at their home in Carmel Valley.

We will take a break mid-meet to honor our Seniors and thank them for 4 years of hard work and play at Carmel High School. Conrad has scheduled Team and Individual Photos for the Boys Swim team for next Tuesday afternoon, May 10, 2011 at the CHS Pool. CHS Diving Team & Individual photos are scheduled for the same date/time too.

Order forms for photos will be given to the boys this week, they will need to bring them to the photo shoot to get your photos ordered. This is a great opportunity to capture swim team memories for yourself, friends and family!

Stevenson Meet Friday @ Carmel HS

It is official - the meet against undefeated Stevenson will be at Carmel HS on Friday at 3:30. This promises to be a great meet and Stevenson always brings out a good crowd so come on out to cheer on the team.

We are in need of folks to stay after the meet and assist with the clean up - please volunteer if you can!

A reminder to all swim families - there are two swim meets scheduled for later this week:

CHS V Stevenson this Friday - should be an excellent meet as Stevenson has long been our toughest rival. The meet was originally scheduled at Stevenson but it looks like it will be moved to Carmel. Final confirmation on this should be in by tomorrow.

CHS V El Cerrito this Saturday - meet is against a visiting team from the Sacramento area. Usually followed by an afternoon on the beach with both teams. This meet is scheduled for 12:00 with warmups at 11:00.

Remember: We need volunteers for set-up timing and clean-up

Check the snack schedule to see if you are scheduled to bring snacks!

There have been questions about practice time this week. Coach Conrad reports that he announced last week practice is Monday - Thursday this week at 12:00-2:00. No practice on Friday. Getting ready for League Championships so all the practices are important!

3 More CCS Times!

Yesterday's meet against Monterey High School showed just how committed our boys are to having an outstanding season. Slated to be a close and difficult meet the Carmel boys took an early lead and stayed that way until the end.

The 200 Medley Relay Team of Hamwey, Price, Jones and Kim plowed over the competition and came up with the first of three CCS cuts at the meet. Freshman Brandon Kim achieved the second CCS cut in the 200IM and Junior Matt Jones earned the third in the 100 Butterfly.

Junior Ben Price (who already has his 100 Breaststroke CCS cut) was only 1/2 a second from breaking the Carmel High School record in that event.

The boys will continue their so far undefeated season with an away meet against King City on Friday. The freshman and sophmore boys will be traveling to this meet.

Great job to our Swimmers, Divers & Coaches!

Carmel v PG Meet a success!

The home meet yesterday against Pacific Grove was a great success for our swimmers. Junior Ben Price set the bar high when he swim for the teams first CCS time in the 100 Breaststroke. The Medley Relay team of Brandon Kim, Ben Price, Matt Jones and Grant Thornburgh was only 1/2 a second from another CCS qualifying time for the team.

The weather was beautiful and sun screen was actually used by the boys. Just a reminder to parents - please don't forget if you have signed up to bring water or snacks for the meet - these boys work hard and can really use them! I will post an updated snack schedule that should serve as a remindr for everyone. If you have not done so yet please sign up for one of the empty slots.

Our next meet is next Wednesday against Monterey High School - it should be a good one! See you all at the pool.....

Carmel v York @ CHS tomorrow

Our first official "dual meet" (Mission Trails Athletic League) is tomorrow (Wednesday) at our home pool (The Bob Walthour Aquatic Center) at 3:30 in the afternoon. Carmel Boys and Girls Swimming & Diving team will be competing against York in our first league meet of the season.

The weather should be great and we hope to see everyone at the pool to cheer on the team!

P.S : If you have not signed up to bring snacks and drinks to one of the meets please look for Barbara Smith (AJ's Mom) at the meet and pick your day.

Our first meet of the 2011 season is tomorrow (Wednesday) against Seaside High School at 3:30. Let's get as many spectators there to cheer on the team as we can!

The parents meeting this afternoon was informative for all attending. Coach Conrad explained the season and the sign-up sheet for meet drinks and snacks was passed around the group. The sign up sheet will be available at the meet tomorrow for those that did not get a chance to participate today. There will be lots of opportunity to volunteer as a timer at the meet tomorrow - bring your rain clothes it may be wet but you will have a poolside view of the meet.

There is need for people to help with set-up and clean-up at our home meets, someone to organize the snacks and drink schedule for the swim meets and a freshman or sophmore parent to learn the Colorado timing system. Introducing CHS's New Assistant Swim Coach

Carmel High's new assistant swim coach Dr. Matt Jones swam the sprint freestyle and butterfly for UCLA in the 1980's, where he earned Most Improved Swimmer of 1986. After his collegiate career, he served as UCLA's assistant swim coach under Ron Ballatore and was the Meet Director for the Pac-10 Championships in 1989. He continued to swim for US Masters through his medical training, where he earned All American status, and in 1990 finished the long course season as the number 1 ranked swimmer in the US for the 50M Free and 50M Fly. Matt won the gold medal in the 100M Butterfly at the FINA World Masters Championships IV in 1992. In 2010, Matt was nationally ranked in several sprint events, including the 50y Free (22.15) and 100y Free (48.97). He set Pacific Masters records in the 50y Fly (23.69) and the 100y Fly (52.73), and was ranked in the top ten nationally in those events.

Dr. Jones is an eye surgeon with Vantage Eye Center, and enjoys spending time with his wife Kim, and their children Thomas and Tara. Welcome to Carmel High Coach Matt!

Practice started today for the 2011 Carmel High School swim team. We are excited to welcome a new year of swimming and the new swimmers to the team.

More information on the season will be posted soon including information on the new assistant swim coach Matt Jones (not to be confused with the swimmer Matt Jones).

A preliminary schedule has been posted on the side bar so mark your calendars now and attend as many meets as you are able to support our swimmers. We are 6 MTAL League Championships in a row and hope to make it 7 this year.

The CHS Swim Team End of the Year Banquet will be on Wednesday June 2nd at the Carmel Youth Center from 6-8pm. We will go forward with Suzanne's idea for a pizza party (see below for your assignment) in order to make it as easy as possible for all involved.

For those concerned about finals we suggest that your student take advantage of the minimum day (they are out at noon) and get their studying done before the banquet, come to the banquet and relax a little (it is only two hours), and do a little more studying after. It should provide a much needed break during a busy studying week.

A few things:

We need a parent(s) to help take over this blog/website. Kai is graduating and so it is time for me to graduate on to other things too. Dana Jones has learned her way around this site quite well, but she has also taken on practically everything else to do with swimming.

Swimming more than many sports really needs parents/volunteer involvement to pull off the before, during, and after meet work of hosting a meet. If you have some time and basic computer knowledge, you can learn the rest of what is needed to help with this site, the photo site, and our youtube site. I will help train anyone that wants to step up and help with these sites.

Unfortunately, the banquet was scheduled during a time I can't make... so I would like to take a little space to thank Dana Jones, Roger Langland, FOCA, parents, volunteers, and swimmers that made the last 4 years a great ride.

I especially want to thank Coaches Matt Borek, Brian Potts, and Conrad Kohrs for their incredible efforts. Conrad, you always amaze me in your ability to have our whole team peak for MTAL. Every year I would look at the times and think to myself, "no way." And, every year I was proven wrong by stellar performances from almost every athlete. It is so exciting to see so many personal bests in one day and year after year.

Kai and I will be wishing all the coaches and future swimmers good luck in going for 7... 8... 9... and more championships in the years to come. You might see me lurking around the deck cheering you on.

I plan to do one last compilation video of the year that I will post here and on youtube.

Message from CHS Athletic Department

The U.S. open is looking for kids 16 years and older to volunteer. The volunteers get a free uniform (2 golf shirts, a windbreaker, baseball hat and water bottle) free pass for all seven days of U.S. Open week and a lunch voucher for each shift they are working. All volunteers need to work at least 3 eight hour shifts.

Also I will sign off on 25 community service hours!!! I know that a lot of CHS athletes have very busy academic and athletic schedules so they can get almost half of their graduation requirement in three days.

CHS stands to gain between 30,000 to 40,000 which will be split between the parent support groups Padre parents & Sports Boosters if we are able to fulfil our commitment to the U.S. Open.

Please try to get some of your athletes to volunteer for the open. This is a win / win as the kids pick up hours, get to watch world class athletes for free, and they help to financially benefit CHS.

Thank you for posting this [see previous post from Coach Kohrs] and I hope that Ryan's experience will be encouraging to the boys to take each day at a time and live as well as they can. I want to clear up the misconception however about Ryan's injuries. As far as we know at this moment, Ryan has injured his collar bone and his shoulder, his neck is really sore and he has swelling of the upper torso (apparently this is where the truck went over him). He is in good spirits and truly appreciative of life and grateful for the gift he has been given. Thank you for all the love and support.

Letter from the Coach

Dear Barracuda & Carmel High School Swimming Community:

ConKohrs Barracuda and Carmel High School standout Ryan Marden survived a life threatening accident while camping with friends this past Sunday evening. One of the campers returned early in the morning from a late night excursion in his truck and mistakenly drove over Ryan while he slept in his sleeping bag. Ryan was transported by life flight helicopter to the Santa Clara Hospital Trauma Center for treatment.

Ryan is back at home recovering and we are all committed to supporting his return to full strength. Ryan’s first comments upon returning home spoke to his disappointment with not being able to complete the swimming season through its championship cycle. He is a potential event winner and team leader.

While Ryan sustained a multitude of broken bones, it was apparently the cushion of the sleeping mattress, his relaxed state and his exceptional physical condition that contributed to his survival of this potentially tragic accident.

Barracuda swimmers and Carmel High swimmers met together to discuss our feelings and thoughts about the accident. We all understand the place that swimming has on the totem pole of life and that, certainly, sports and swimming are not the end all and be all of our lives. We committed ourselves, however, to concepts of pride and achievement as a team; in giving our absolute best to creating an environment where our time and effort have a larger meaning. Where we understand and act upon goals in a larger context than simply winning and losing, best times or not, CCS qualifying standards or otherwise.

We rejoice that our teammate survived and carry his indomitable spirit with us as we encourage his recovery and seek to attain the higher reaches of our athletic potential in the weeks to come.

A number of factors came together to make this meet bitter sweet. There were some great individual performances mixed with a disappointing end result. Obviously cliche... this is the kind of experience that can determine commitment, build depth of character, and is certainly one to learn from. Go Carmel.

Thanks to all the dedicated timers and officials that sat in the rain to make the meet possible. We had a difficult time finding replacement timers at this last meet. Remember there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer, there is great on the job training (even if you think you know nothing about swimming you can do it), and it is a great way to experience the meet up close and personal.

Congratulations to the CHS 2009 Water Polo Varsity, JV, and Freshman teams.

Hard work and spirited play showed itself in one of the best seasons ever. To watch the dedicated work and thrilling games from the standing-room-only deck was a thrill.

Great Job by All!

Now is a good time to consider how you want to stay in the water and improve the great shape you are in.

Swimming with the Barracudas is one way to prepare for the CHS swim season and improve your shape for water polo.

Here is an amended Fee Schedule for H.S. Development Late Registration 11/09/09:

• Swimming full time thru January 31 (H.S. begins February 1); 1 payment of $375.00 (or pro-rated based on return date)

• *Swimming part time thru Jan. 31 is not recommended for performance but is accommodated: Fee is $50 per month for 1-2 session week and is due as one payment.

• Swimming full time thru League Championships; 2 payments, 1 due 11/09/09 = $425.00 (or pro-rated based on return date); 1 due 1/01/10 = $400.00 (or pro-rated based on return date)

• Swimming full time thru Summer Season; 2 payments; 1 due 11/09/09 = $600 (or pro-rated based on return date); 1 due 1/01/10 = $600 (or pro-rated based on return date)

End of Season Banquet: CHS 2009

Five straight MTAL Championships. 100 Wins for Coach Kohrs as head coach of CHS. Three straight undefeated years... and more. Swimmers, Divers, Coaches, Parents, and Volunteers all have a great deal to be proud of.

There are too many people to thank for the success of the 2009 season without missing someone. Thanks to the many efforts by all who participated. It does take whole "village" to run a swim team.

Grayson Huston will join the swimmers at CCS next weekend. Grayson won league last week with and all american consideration score of 506.20. Which was also a new MTAL league record. Danny DeGeorge also placed 3rd in league.

As the Coach has let the boys know that there will be a very short practice on Friday please let everyone know that the pasta dinner will be at 5:30! (Not right after practice)

The pasta feed is tomorrow night (Friday) before League Championships on Saturday. It will begin right after practice and will be ending early to allow the boys time to go home, shave and get rest before the big meet.

The Pasta Feed will be at 49 Via Milpitas, Carmel Valley. The Hertleins will expect the boys and their coaches right after practice. Non-drivers should talk to their teammates (drivers must be of age to drive other students) or parents about getting rides out to the Carmel Valley Village.
